If you're shooting RAW, you can get pretty similar results with a single file. The way LR6 does it, gives you more control to be subtle and use adjustment brushes and such to pull out more detail from this area or that area without making it look like /r/shittyhdr. LR6's built in HDR does not do automatic tone-mapping, if you want the "HDR look" you need to crank up the shadow slider, pull down the highlight slider and turn up the clarity slider (and possibly the vibrance or saturation sliders a little). There are also some 3rd party HDR plug ins for LR5, or you can upgrade to LR6 which has built in HDR. Once it is done, you quit photoshop and when it asks if you want to save, you say "yes" (you don't have to "save as" lightroom will grab the file when it saves)

If you have photoshop, there is an option to "Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop." Lightroom will send the files over to Photoshop which will process them into HDR and give you some options.
